Bulldogs Limit Nation's Top-Ranked Lakers To Single Goal In Non-League Setback

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team battled nationally top-ranked rival Grand Valley State for 90 minutes, but came out on the short end of a 1-0 decision against the Lakers on Wednesday (Oct. 30) afternoon at the FSU Soccer Field.

The contest was scheduled as a non-conference tilt between the two league rivals as part of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) scheduling system.

Earlier this year, in league play, the Bulldogs had suffered a 6-0 conference road decision to GVSU, but this matchup proved to be a defensive battle.

The Lakers scored the only goal of the match in the 33rd minute when Katie Klunder recorded her third goal of the year off an assist from Olivia Emery.

Offense was hard to come by for both teams although Grand Valley State managed 21 total shots on the day to only one for the Bulldogs.  However, FSU senior goalkeeper Rachel McCollum came up with nine saves to keep the Lakers at bay most of the way.

Ferris State's lone shot came from midfielder Taylor DiCicco.

In addition to holding a 21-1 edge in total shots, the Lakers also had all six of the game's corner kick tries.  GVSU totaled five fouls to two for Ferris State and was whistled for the only offsides of the contest.

Abbey Miller made a single save in net for Grand Valley State while earning the win in 90 minutes of action.

With the loss, Ferris State fell to 8-7-1 overall this season and GVSU improved to 15-0-1 on the year.

The Bulldogs, who have clinced a GLIAC Tournament berth, will host Lake Erie for Senior Day and the regular-season finale on Sunday (Nov. 3) with match time set for 12 p.m. (ET) at the FSU Soccer Field.
