Women's Soccer Shuts Out Lake Erie To Win Regular-Season Finale On Senior Day

Big Rapids, Mich. - Two first period goals lifted the Ferris State University women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout win over visiting Lake Erie in the Bulldogs' regular-season finale on Sunday (Nov. 3) at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids.

The win came on Senior Day as FSU honored five seniors prior to their final home games.  The group of seniors included goalkeeper Rachel McCollum, defenders Amanda Foster and Audra Merino along with forwards Jenna Ruimveld and Courtney Meharg.

McCollum earned the shutout victory in goal in her final home contest by making 12 saves to keep the visiting Storm at bay for the entire day.

Ferris State scored first at 23:36 of the first half when junior Casey Shauman scored from the side on a pass setup by Lindsey Scott.

The Bulldogs struck again at 38:43 of the opening period with sophomore Nichole Boehnke notching her league-leading 11th goal of the year off an assist from Shauman along with sophomore Abby Meirndorf.  The pass from the corner came into the box and Boehnke found the back of the net.

The score remained 2-0 the rest of the way as neither team was able to capitalize on several scoring opportunities in the second half of action.

Overall, the Bulldogs came up with 28 shots to 18 for the Storm. FSU had only a 12-11 advantage in total shots in the opening frame, but posted 16 shots in the second half while limiting Lake Erie to only seven opportunities.  FSU had 14 total shots on goal compared to 12 for LEC.

The contest proved physical at times with FSU called for 14 fouls and the Storm whistled 10 times on the day.  Both teams earned four corner kick tries but were not able to find the net.

Lake Erie's Sarah Stroope suffered the loss in net while making nine saves for the Storm.  She was handed a red card in the second half after trying to thwart a potential Bulldog scoring rush and replaced by Samantha Wiles, who totaled three saves in 14:57 of action.  McCollum went the distance for the Bulldogs in goal.

FSU also had six other potential scoring chances waived off as the Bulldogs were called for offsides.

With the win, Ferris State improved to 9-7-1 overall and 7-4-1 in league action. This year marks the first time in school history in which the Bulldogs have posted back-to-back winning campaigns.

Ferris State finished the regular-season tied for fourth place in the GLIAC standings with Ohio Dominican.  

ODU earned the tiebreaker by virtue of an earlier win over the Bulldogs this campaign, which means FSu will be the number five seed for the conference tournament and visit Ohio Dominican on Tuesday (Nov. 5). Match time for the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal contest is slated for 2 p.m. (ET).

This year represents the Bulldogs' fourth consecutive trip to the conference tournament and the Bulldogs will be looking to reach the league semifinals for the second-straight campaign with a win over the Panthers.

Ferris State closed the year with a 7-1 overall record at home this season and the lone loss was a 1-0 non-conference setback to archrival and nationally top-ranked Grand Valley State this past week.  Overall, FSU outscored the opponents by a 23-4 count in Big Rapids with five shutouts.

This year also represents only the sixth time in the program's 15-year history in which the Bulldogs have won at least nine contests in a season.
