Shauman's Hat Trick Lifts Bulldogs Over Northwood On "Beats & Cleats" Day

Big Rapids, Mich. - A hat trick from junior forward Casey Shauman and a pair of late goals lifted the Ferris State University women's soccer team to an impressive 5-2 win over visiting Northwood on Sunday (OCt. 12) at the FSU Soccer Field.

The Bulldogs earned the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) encounter by producing a season-high five goals, including three by Shauman, before a large crowd of fans and supporters in Big Rapids.

The contest included a pregame concert and special halftime activities as part of a "Beats & Cleats" promotion organized by an on-campus marketing class.

With the home crowd behind them, the Bulldogs came out energized and struck for their first goal only 2:33 into the contest when Shauman received a pass upfield from fellow junior Stephanie Garland and put the shot to the back corner of the net for an early 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs added a key goal in the final minute of the opening period when Shauman took advantage of a cross pass from FSU's Hunter Dolan and scored on the Timberwolves' net to give Ferris State a 2-0 lead at the break.

Shauman, who's FSU's leading scorer on the year, completed her first career hat trick by scoring in the 66th minute off a feed by junior forward Nichole Boehnke. It represented her seventh goal of the year.

Northwood finally got on the board and trimmed the lead back to two goals when Melissa Seymour scored in unassisted fashion on a deep shot that just got past the outstretched arms of Bulldog goalkeeper savanna Wojtanowski. It came in the 69th minute and made the score 3-1 in favor of FSU.

However, the Bulldogs responded with two goals less than two minutes apart to assert the lead once more. Garland scored on a rebound with an assist to freshman Brenna Cockerill at 83:54 and soon after Jenna Winkel followed with her first goal on a rebound try with an assist to Garland at 85:11 of the outing.

Seymour scored the final goal of the day at 87:47 for Northwood to account for the final margin.

Ferris State held a commanding 29-11 edge in total shots for the contest and the Bulldogs had 18 shots on goal to only six for the Timberwolves.

Wojtanowski totaled four saves in net while earning the victory for the Bulldogs in 90 minutes in net. Meanwhile, NU's Julie Shields stopped 13 FSU scoring chances in suffering the setback.

Ferris State had several other opportunities to score, but was called for offsides six times to once for Northwood. NU totaled 13 fouls in comparison to FSU's eight on the afternoon. The Bulldogs also received seven corner kick tries to only two for the Timberwolves.

With the win, FSU improved to 3-6-2 overall and 2-4-1 in league action. NU fell to 1-9-1 overall and 0-7 in league action.

FSU has presently won two of its last three outings to date this season and all but one of FSU's setbacks this season has come by a single goal.

Ferris State will play three contests this coming week as FSU ventures to West Michigan rival Grand Valley State to start the stretch on Wednesday (Oct. 15) for a 7 p.m. (ET) non-league contest in Allendale.

The Bulldogs then return home to host Ashland on Friday (Oct. 17) at 4 p.m. (ET) before entertaining Lake Erie on Sunday (Oct. 19) in a 4 p.m. (ET) tilt. Both will be GLIAC matchups.
