Ferris State Soccer Wins Second-Straight By Beating Nationally-Ranked California Team

Big Rapids, Mich. - An early second half goal lifted the Ferris State University women's soccer squad over nationally-ranked Cal-State San Bernardino on Sunday (Sept. 13) in a neutral site match at Allendale, Mich.

Senior forward Nichole Boehnke scored in the 51st minute of the contest on a deflection in the box following a corner kick for her second goal of the campaign. It was assisted by freshman Rachel Fouts and would prove to be the only scoring needed for FSU.

The Coyotes entered the contest ranked 13th in the nation in the Hero Sports Division II Rankings along with 10th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) West Regional listing. The win was the second-straight for the Bulldogs.

Along with Boehnke's goal, the Bulldogs also received a complete-game, nine-save performance from senior goalkeeper Maddie Haustein in net. She played all 90 minutes in the win.

Ferris State improved to 2-2 overall this campaign by beating Cal-State San Bernardino, which fell to 1-3-1 overall with the loss at the Grand Valley State Soccer Field.

FSU pulled out the victory despite being outshot 17-7 for the outing. The Coyotes held a 9-2 edge in total shots in the first half and then posted eight in the second half to five for the Bulldogs. Cal-State San Bernardino also received six corner kick chances compared to three for FSU.

Overall, the Coyotes had eight fouls to five for Ferris State.

Emily Whyte suffered the loss in net for Cal-State San Bernardino despite playing all 90 minutes and making five saves.

Besides Boehnke, the Bulldogs were led by senior forward Casey Shauman, who had a team-high three shots, including two on goal. Freshman Olivia Brewer also had two shots on goal in the win.

Ferris State returns home and will host Aquinas on Tuesday (Sept. 15) in a special 1 p.m. (ET) afternoon tilt in Big Rapids. The match will be played at River Street Park in Big Rapids with local elementary children expected to be in attendance for the school day matchup.
