Bulldog Soccer Drops Opening Contest On Minnesota Weekend Trip

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team battled Minnesota State on the road much of the way Friday (Sept. 9), but fell short in a 2-0 setback to the Mavericks as FSU opened its two-match trip in Mankato, Minn.

The host Mavericks scored once in each half and shutout the Bulldogs to improve to 1-0-1 on the year. FSU, which was coming off a 4-0 home win earlier this week over St. Joseph's (Ind.), dropped to 1-2-0 overall.

Minneosta State struck first only 4:30 into the contest when Alesha Duccini tallied the first marker of the day off an assist from Taylor Kenealy.

The Mavericks then added a second goal at 59:59 of the second frame when Morgan Cottew scored in unassisted fashion.

The Bulldogs were outshot 24-10 overall as Minnesota State totaled 12 shots in each half. They also held a 5-1 edge in corner kick tries, but were called for 12 fouls to only four for the Bulldogs.

MSU's Alexa Rabune earned the win in gaol with three saves in 90 minutes of work while FSU freshman Alison Chesterfield suffered the loss despite making 17 saves in going the distance.

Midfielder Alexis Schodowski paced FSU with three shots in the contest while both Kate Kelly and Meredith Smith recorded two shots apiece.

Ferris State wraps up its trip to Minnesota by visiting Winona State on Sunday (Sept. 11) for a 1 p.m. (ET) tilt in Winona, Minn.
