Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team opened a two-game trip to Ohio with a 2-1 setback to Lake Erie on Friday (Oct. 6) afternoon at Painesville.
The host Storm scored twice in the second half and held off the Bulldogs in winning the one-goal decision as they improved to 7-4-0 overall this year.
After a scoreless first half of action, Lake Erie struck first as Becca Cornell tallied her second goal of the campaign at 48:34 of the second frame. She found the back of the net on a header from the right side of the box assisted by Kynslie Murphy.
Murphy followed in the 75th minute with a goal of her own to push the Lake Erie advantage to two goals. Her third marker this season was assisted by Elizabeth Roesch.
Ferris State finally was able to score at 84:30 when Carley Dubbert tallied her first goal this year in unassisted fashion. However, that was all the scoring the Bulldogs could produce as Lake Erie held on for the win.
Both teams totaled only eight shots apiece in the contest, but FSU did hold a 5-1 edge in corner kick tries. Lake Erie finished with five fouls to four for the Bulldogs.
The Storm's Marissa Brannon recorded the victory in goal with four saves in 90 minutes of action. Meanwhile, freshman Grace Kraft went the distance for FSU and made two saves in the setback at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
Ferris State will wrap up its weekend trip to Ohio by facing Walsh on Sunday (Oct. 9) starting at 1 p.m. (ET) in Canton.
