Ferris State Soccer Stays Unbeaten In GLIAC With Home Win Over SVSU

Game Highlights & Interview

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team stayed unbeaten in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Sunday (Sept. 24) as the Bulldogs defeated the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals 2-1 at the South Athletic Fields.

Senior midfielder Hilerie Schatzle notched a goal and later an assist on what stood as the game-winning goal for Ferris State in the win.

Schatzle scored at 10:16 of the contest from freshman forward Gabrielle Karam for a 1-0 lead. She took the shot off a pass in the box and went cross cage low for her first of the season.

Ferris State built a 2-0 lead at 65:36 of the game when freshman midfielder Bri Rogers netted her second marker of the season. Schatzle took the corner kick from the southeast corner of the field and flew it to the far side of the box where Rogers leapt and put the ball away on a header for what stood as the game-winning goal. The goal was Rogers' second of the season.

The Cardinals returned fire with 1:04 remaining in regulation when Allison Sims put a high shot under the cross bar and in to pull the game within 2-1. FSU, though, held on to preserve the triumph.

The Bulldogs held a 24-17 edge in total shots, with a 16-4 margin in the first half. Ferris State had a 10-6 shots on goal lead overall.

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Grace Kraft earned her fifth win of the season, making five saves on six shots.

The win gives Ferris State six points and a 2-0-0 record in GLIAC play, which has them alone in first place, two points ahead of Northern Michigan and Davenport.

Ferris State gets seven days off until its next contest when the Bulldogs return to action on the road in Allendale to take on the Grand Valley State Lakers Sunday (Oct. 1) at 1 p.m. (EST).
