Ferris State Soccer Closes Regular-Season By Beating GVSU For First Time Since 2002

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team closed out the regular-season with a huge victory on Friday (Oct. 27) as the Bulldogs beat regionally top-ranked Grand Valley State 1-0 in non-league action at the South Athletic Fields in Big Rapids.

FSU beat the Lakers for only the fourth time in program history and first time since 2002 by handing GVSU its first shutout loss of the season.

The Bulldog's held their own thru a scoreless first half, then scored late in the second half to top the Lakers 1-0 for the victory.
 
Ferris State sophomore defender Tia VanSchuilichem scored the only goal for the game at 75:79 of the second half. She finished a cross from sophomore midfielder Jenna Hong
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Alison Chesterfield earned a shutout for the game and stopped nine shots overall for the Bulldogs.
 
The Bulldogs totaled 13 shots with five on goal to go with one corner kick in their final regular-season action. 
 
The Lakers doubled the Bulldogs on shots with 26 for the game. They also had nine corner kicks and a pair of GVSU goaltenders combined for seven saves. 

The victory was an important one for the Bulldogs, who were eighth this past week in the Division II Midwest Regional Rankings and are eyeing their first potential NCAA Tourney berth in school history.
 
Ferris State begins postseason play at home on Tuesday (Oct. 31) as the Bulldogs open GLIAC Tournament action against Saginaw Valley State in the quarterfinal-round in Big Rapids. Match time is set for 3 p.m. (ET). FSU is the number three seed for the league tournament with SVSU seeded sixth in the draw.
