Bulldog Women's Soccer Tops Michigan Tech To Stay Perfect In The GLIAC

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer squad continued its impressive start to the campaign as the Bulldogs beat Michigan Tech 3-1 on Sunday (Oct. 6) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at the Bulldog Soccer Field.

Ferris State scored only 1:43 into the contest and built a 3-0 lead en route to the win. With the triumph, FSU improved to 8-1-1 overall this year and 2-0-0 in the GLIAC.

Bulldog junior Bri Rogers found the scoring column first early on as she produced her fourth goal of the year off an assist on a throw in from senior Tia VanSuilichem less than two minutes into the tilt. The goal at 1:43 gave FSU an early advantage against the Huskies.

The Bulldogs increased their advantage to two goals when Brandi Wagner earned her first marker of the year shortly after taking the field 24:02 into the first half. Sophomore Pia Nagel was credited with the helper on the goal.

For the first half, the Bulldogs outshot Michigan Tech 17-8 and carried the two-goal lead into the half.

The score stood until the 52nd minute when Abigail Gilmore notched her second goal of the campaign off an assist by Emily Mergener to make it 3-0 in FSU's favor.

Michigan Tech made a late push and got its only goal of the afternoon when Alexis Shatrau found Gabby Sgambati for her third marker of the season to cut the lead to 3-1 at 83:17 of the second half.

The Bulldogs, though, held strong and came away with the win as senior goalkeeper Grace Kraft finished with nine saves in 90 minutes to improve to 4-0 in net this year.

Amanda Young suffered the setback in goal for Michigan Tech as she made 11 saves on 14 chances in going the distance.

The Bulldogs finished with a 31-18 edge in total shots, including a 14-10 margin in shots on goal. FSU also generated seven corner kick opportunities to three for MTU.

Ferris State hits the road next weekend for two big GLIAC matchups. FSU first visits Saginaw Valley State on Friday (Oct. 11) for a 1 p.m. (ET) encounter before venturing to Ashland on Sunday (Oct. 13) with match time also set for 1 p.m. (ET) in Ohio.
