Burns Scores Twice as Ferris State Starts 1-0 in GLIAC Play with Victory Over Roosevelt

Chicago, Ill. – Senior defender Autumn Burns scored her first two collegiate goals for the Ferris State University women's soccer team as the Bulldogs triumphed 5-2 over Roosevelt to begin Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play Friday (Sept. 20).
The Bulldogs (2-1-2) scored a season-high five goals in their first GLIAC contest of the year. Three of their goals came from defenders with Burns leading the way, recording her first collegiate points with two goals to lead FSU in the victory.
Ferris State got its first goal of the game early in the first half when Roosevelt was credited with an own goal at 10:10 of the period. Junior defender Bella Vallone scored her first goal of the season at 11:53 to give FSU an early 2-0 advantage. Senior Lindsay Cole recorded her first assist of the year on Vallone's goal.
Roosevelt proceeded to tie the game with goals from Kyra Cruickshank at 26:07 and Paola Macias at 31:32. Alex Creel assisted on Cruickshank's goal while Macias' goal was unassisted.
The game remained tied 2-2 for only 10 minutes. Burns gave FSU a 3-2 lead with her first strike at 41:20. Freshman Abby Druelle recorded her first career point with the assist on Burns' goal.
FSU held its 3-2 advantage going into halftime. The Bulldogs attempted 14 shots with nine on target. Roosevelt's goalkeeper Roxana Herrera made six saves. FSU also had eight corner kicks compared to three for Roosevelt. Freshman goalkeeper Morgan Fillion drew the start for Ferris State and allowed two goals on two shots faced from Roosevelt in the first half.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Kubacki played the final 45 minutes of the contest for FSU. She did not face a shot during her time on the field.
In the second half, FSU scored two more times. Junior Haley Buckman tallied her second goal of the year at 50:34 to give Ferris State a 4-2 lead. Katherine Welch assisted.
Later, at 69:33, the Bulldogs scored their final goal of the game courtesy of Burns. Welch had another assist as FSU took a 5-2 advantage that they held for the remainder of the game.
In the second half, Ferris State had six corner kicks to Roosevelt's zero and had seven shots on goal to Roosevelt's zero. For the game, the Bulldogs had season-highs with 15 shots on goal and 14 corners. They also faced a season-low two shots on goal and allowed Roosevelt to attempt only two total shots.
The Bulldogs will be back in action for another GLIAC contest on the road Sunday (Sept. 22) against Wisconsin-Parkside. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. (ET).
