Ferris State Soccer Scores Two Late Goals and Tops the Pride 2-1

Hammond, Ind. – Late second half goals from Brinley Bell and Katherine Welch lifted the Ferris State University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Pride of Purdue Northwest Sunday (Oct. 13).

The Bulldogs (5-2-3, 4-1-1 GLIAC) trailed the Pride for a majority of Sunday's contest, but two goals in the 79th minute gave Ferris State an impressive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win on the road.

Morgan Fillion was the starting goalkeeper for Ferris State in the win. She allowed one goal from the Pride at 10:29 when Emma Carter gave PNW an early 1-0 lead. Yoselin Garcia had an assist on Carter's goal.

At halftime, the Pride had a 1-0 advantage, registering one shot on goal in the frame. Both squads attempted two corner kicks in the first 45 minutes and FSU fired two shots on goal. PNW's starting goalkeeper Meta Fischer made both saves.

Late in the second half, FSU scored two goals in rapid succession to take the lead. Bell started the scoring at 79:09 with her first goal of the year. Bella Vallone sent a long pass down the field for Bell, who beat Fischer to the ball at the top of the box and headed it into the net, tying the game at 1-1.

Then, just 36 seconds later, Welch gave FSU a 2-1 lead with her third goal of the year. She fired a left-footed shot from the top of the box into the top-left corner of the net, giving Ferris State their first lead of the game.

The Bulldogs held on for their fourth conference victory of the year. For the game, FSU attempted six shots on goal, took six corner kicks and committed 15 fouls. The Pride had three shots on goal, two corner kicks and received three yellow cards.

Fillion made two saves in her fourth win of the season. Welch fired a game-high five shots on goal and Natalia Leavens had two.

Ferris State will return home for two GLIAC games next weekend. Northern Michigan comes to Big Rapids Friday (Oct. 18) and Michigan Tech will visit the Bulldog Soccer Field Sunday (Oct. 20). Both games are scheduled for a 1 p.m. (ET) kickoff.
