Ferris State Women's Tennis Battles Hard In Doubleheader Setback At D1 Western Michigan

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's tennis squad officially opened the 2020-21 season on Saturday (Jan. 30), falling to NCAA Division I Western Michigan in a doubleheader in Kalamazoo.

The host Broncos claimed a 6-1 triumph in the opening match and then beat the Bulldogs 7-0 in the finale in non-league action.

In the opening match, WMU took the doubles point and claimed five of the six singles matches in garnering the win despite an impressive effort by the Bulldogs, who saw their first action since last March.

"This was the best match we've played since I took over the program a couple of years ago," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "Everyone played outstanding against a strong NCAA Division I school."

The Bulldogs' opener included a three-set win from Morgan Waller at the number one singles flight in the lineup.

"Any win today would have been a good win, but to get a win at number one singles was outstanding," Doren said.

In the final match, the Broncos again claimed the doubles point en route to the shutout victory, but FSU managed a 6-3 win at one doubles with the tandem of Agata Klak and Isabela Paixao earning the triumph.

The Bulldogs will return home for their home opener against Tiffin on Friday, Feb. 12, with match time set for 4:30 p.m. (ET) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.
