Ferris State Claims First GLIAC Women's Tennis Title Since 2002 With Road Triumph

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's tennis team won its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship in nearly two decades, topping Michigan Tech on the road 6-1 on Saturday (April 17) in league action in Houghton.

The Bulldogs stayed perfect in the GLIAC at 8-0 and moved to 13-1 overall on the year, winning the conference for the first time since 2002.

Ferris State has one regular-season match remaining on Tuesday (April 20) at Saginaw Valley State, but entering the day only one other school had one loss or fewer in Northwood and FSU topped the Timberwolves earlier this week in Midland.

Along with the women's team, the Bulldog men also captured their fifth title in the last six tries to cap a perfect regular-season with an identical 6-1 win over the Huskies.

The Bulldogs swept the doubles round in Saturday's contest, claiming wins of 7-6 (3) at the number one flight along with 6-1 at two doubles and 6-2 at the third spot to garner the initial point of the outing.

FSU then came back in singles play to win five of the six matches, sweeping the first thru fourth positions to go with a straight-set victory at six singles.

Overall, the title was the 20th in school history for the Bulldogs. FSU first won the league in 1974 and then had a 17-year run from 1984-2000 to go with the 2002 and 2021 titles.

The Bulldogs will take on Saginaw Valley State on Tuesday in University Center before heading to Midland for the GLIAC Tournament set for April 23-25.
