
Ferris State Tennis Sweeps Purdue Northwest In GLIAC Play In Indiana
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads came away with big wins in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Friday (April 11) in Hammond, Ind.
The Bulldogs topped Purdue Northwest by a 5-2 count in women's play before beating the Pride 4-3 in the men's contest.
"It was a great day for the Dawgs," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "The women took care of business and came away with a big win. Today was a total team win for the men from solid doubles play to a great fight in singles.
"With the match tied 3-3, Adrian Catahan dropped the first set then refocused for an awesome three-set win to clinch the victory," he added.
The Bulldog women swept the doubles round with the top flight team of Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer and Kennedy Dumas recording a 6-2 victory. Meanwhile, Yara Madi and Aimee Reynoso claimed a 7-5 win at two doubles and the third doubles pairing of Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer and Ayva Johnstone posted a 6-4 win.
In singles play, Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer was a straight-set winner at one singles with Madi doing likewise at two singles. Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer won a four singles and Katherine Earnest finished with a win at six singles in the triumph.
The men's match featured a pair of top 30 teams in the country with PNW ranked 29th and FSU 30th entering the tilt. However, the Bulldogs pulled out the victory.
Ferris State's top doubles team of Erik Kovacs and Kevin Kovacs were 6-3 winners at one doubles while Felipe Iser and Alessandro Santangelo claimed a win at three doubles, giving FSU the early point in the match.
The Bulldogs also got a three-set win from Kevin Kovacs at the top of the singles lineup. Jose Andres Perez Alarcon won in straight-sets at five singles and Catahan finished the match with his three-set win at six singles.
The FSU women improved to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in the GLIAC with the victory while the men are now 10-6 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Both Ferris State teams will visit Roosevelt University on Saturday (April 12) for league action in Chicago.
