Record-Breaking Event For FSU Track Teams

Allendale, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's indoor track and field teams had posted impressive results in this weekend's (Feb. 12-13) Grand Valley State "Big Meet" hosted inside the Laker Turf Building at Allendale, Mich.

The meet field included participants from a number of schools at various levels, including Ferris, GVSU, Eastern Michigan, Western Kentucky, Michigan State, Central Michigan, Florida International, Southern Illinois, Indiana Tech, Oakland, Calvin, Purdue, Cal-State Los Angeles and others.

In all, the Bulldogs finished with an automatic NCAA qualifier, three provisional national qualifiers, one school record and six all-time top five indoor school efforts during the competition.

Junior Tina Muir highlighted the Bulldogs' performances with a first-place finish in the women's 5,000-meter invitational field. Her time of 16:50.41 in the event surpassed the NCAA Division II Automatic Qualifying standard for this year's national championships and broke her own school record in the event previously set last season.

Meanwhile, senior Greg Burns surpassed a national provisional standard in winning the men's pole vault open division with a vault of 15-9 in the event, which also ranks as one of the school's best showings in history.

Freshman Alyssa Osika was a provisional national qualifer with a 13th-place performance in the women's mile run invitational (5:02.76) and her effort represented the fifth-best all-time indoor performance in school history.

Freshman Anna Rudd also reached a provisional national time by coming in 16th overall in the 5,000 meters (17:31.49) with her finish time trailing only Muir's top mark on the school's all-time indoor chart.

Freshman Shelby Janutol placed ninth overall in the open division of the 800 meters (2:18.95).

FSU's Justin Price took fifth place overall among a field of nearly 70 competitors in the men's 400-meter open race (50.04). He also posted one of the school's top five all-time indoor marks in the 200 meters after placing 30th overall (22.92) in the open division of the event.

Freshman David Silversmith was eighth in the 5,000-meter open field (15:32.74) for the Bulldogs.

Finally, senior Mike Mangieri came in 24th among a field of nearly 80 runners in the 5,000 meters with his time of 14:48.65 ranking as the school's third-best mark ever in the race.

Up next for the Bulldogs is the annual Central Michigan Jack Skoog Open set for Friday, Feb. 19, starting at 5 p.m. (EST) in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

The meet will serve as the Bulldogs' final competition prior to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Championships on Feb. 26-27 in Allendale.
