FSU Track Takes Part In Two Weekend Meets

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams sent competitors to two different meets this past weekend (April 23-24).

The Bulldogs first had competitors on Friday (April 23) at the 44th annual Hillsdale "Gina" Relays held in Hillsdale, Mich., before competing Saturday (April 24) at the Aquinas Invitational in Grand Rapids.

The Gina Relays included student-athletes from schools at all levelsthroughout the Midwest and across the nation while the Aquinas Invitational featured schools such as FSU, Aquinas, Albion, Alma, Olivet, Calvin, Davenport, Grand Valley State, Valparaiso and others.

In Saturday's Aquinas Invitational, freshman Alyssa Osika led the Bulldog women by claiming first place in the 800 meters (2:16.34).

Freshman Zoey Hohlmann earned runner-up honors in the 400 meters (58.52), junior Megan Josey wound up second in the 5,000 meters (18:42.60) while sophomore Jessica Schewe was third in the pole vault (9-4.25).

Freshman Shelby Janutol placed third overall in the 1,500 meters (4:45.93) while senior Emily Cross came in fourth overall in the 100-meter hurdles (15.35) and also tied for fourth place in the high jump (5-1).  Freshman Christa Cwiek placed fourth in the javelin (103-8).
 
Freshman Felicia Peacock was sixth in the 5,000 meters (19:12.73), freshman Andrea Fogle came in sixth overall in the discus (131-1) freshman Jordan McGuire took eighth place in the 5,000 meters (19:30.30) and junior Amy Joostberns finished eighth (126-10) in the discus.

Sophomore Justin Price led the men's team at the Aquinas Invitational by winning the 400 meters (48.77) and finishing fourth in the 200 meters (22.57).

Meanwhile, senior Greg Burns also won the pole vault (15-1) for the Bulldogs while senior Joe Leppek took fourth (12-7.50) and freshman Ryan Hecksel fifth (12-1.50) in the same event.

Freshman Ryan Chute took third place in the 1,500 meters (3:59.90) and sophomore J.J. Vandenburg took fifth place in the hammer throw (164-1). Senior Brian Reynolds finished seventh in the 5,000 meters (15:42.29). 

Sophomore Alex Best was eighth in the 1,500 meters (4:06.24) and freshman Kyle Walch placed eighth in the 110-meter hurdles (18.31).

FSU also recorded a second-place finish in the men's 4x400-meter relay (3:28.47).

Meanwhile, at the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays, freshman Anna Rudd placed 17th in the 5,000-meter run invitational field (17:33.67) for the women's team.

Senior Mike Mangieri came in 18th overall in the 5,000-meter run invitational (14:49.43) while sophomore Tyler Crossman placed 36th (15:08.49) in the same event at the Gina Relays.

Freshman David Silversmith took 27th overall in the 10,000-meter run invitational (31:53.84).

Ferris State is next slated to compete on Friday, April 30, at the Northwood Invitational in Midland, Mich.  FSU then hosts the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 5-7 at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids.
