Bulldog Volleyball Makes Quick Work Of Walsh In GLIAC Play

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball team made quick work of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) newcomer Walsh on Friday (Sept. 21) evening as the Bulldogs rolled to a 3-0 sweep over the Cavaliers in league action at the Ewigleben Sports Arena.

The 24th-ranked Bulldogs posted the win by scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-16 in improving to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the GLIAC this campaign.  Walsh fell to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in league competition with the setback.

Senior outside hitter Aly Brecht paced the defending GLIAC North Division Champions with a match-high 15 kills, which included nine in the first set.  She added two blocks in the win.

FSU also received 11 kills and 13 digs from sophomore outside hitter Courtney Rehm to go with eight kills by senior middle hitter Anne Sutton.  Freshman outside hitter Megan Vander Meer contributed seven kills while junior libero Brandie Merren tallied 17 digs and senior defensive specialist Paige Wyers had 11 digs.

Senior setter Samantha Fordyce keyed the Bulldog attack with 38 assists and she also added eight digs in the first league home match for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State hit .316 overall for the night and totaled 60 digs, 47 kills, six service aces and five total blocks.

On the opposite side, Walsh was paced by Julianne O'Donnell's 10 kills and 16digs.  Setter Hannah Duran had 28 assists and eight digs in the losing cause.

The Bulldogs held the Cavaliers to a .159 attack percentage on 33 kills.  Walsh had 51 digs, three blocks and two aces.

Ferris State posted a .385 attack percentage in the opening set followed by a .368 figure in the second frame.

The Bulldogs will remain at home to face the other conference newcomer in Malone on Saturday (Sept. 22) at 3 p.m. (ET).  The Bulldogs will help "Paint Big Rapids Pink" by supporting breast cancer research in the match inside the Ewigleben Sports Arena.
