Ferris State Volleyball Wraps Up Unbeaten Weekend With Senior Day Triumph

Big Rapids, Mich. - It took a full five sets, but the Ferris State University women's volleyball team wrapped up its weekend homestand with a perfect mark as the Bulldogs topped Saginaw Valley State 3-2 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Saturday (Nov. 9) at the Ewigleben Sports Arena.

The 24th-ranked Bulldogs moved to 20-7 overall and 13-3 in the GLIAC with the win, which came on the heels of a 3-0 shutout over Lake Superior State on Friday afternoon.

Ferris State dropped the first set 25-21 before coming back to win the second and third frames by scores of 25-14 and 28-26, respectively.  SVSU then won the fourth set 25-22 before the Bulldogs responded by winning the deciding set 16-14 overall.

SVSU fell to 16-11 overall and 8-8 in league action with the loss.

The Bulldogs finished the match with three players reaching double-figures in kills. Junior Courtney Rehm paced FSU with 17 kills while sophomore Alexis Huntey added 14 and Caroline Heitzman netted 11. 

Overall, Ferris State posted 60 kills with 29 errors on 182 total attempts for a .170 attack figure.  FSU also had 85 digs and five aces, which helped offset 12 service errors.

Freshman setter Stephanie Sikorski tallied 50 assists with 12 digs in a double-double showing while FSU also received 27 digs from senior libero Brandie Merren along with 11 by Huntey and 10 from Rehm.  Senior middle hitter Angi Kent added eight kills with four block assists.

Ferris State finished the match with five solo blocks and 10 assisted efforts.  Rehm had three of FSU's solo blocks with an assist to lead the way.

On the opposite side, Kelsey Ferla paced the visitors with 14 kills.  Both Ashley Driscoll and Lyndsay Reynolds chipped in 10 kills apiece.  Ferla had a team-high 22 digs defensively with Brooke Tiller compiling 18 and SVSU also received 12 each from Kate Czopek and Nicole Adam.

The Cardinals managed only a .102 attack percentage and finished with 51 kills, 79 digs, nine aces and 10 service errors. They also had 20 block assists to go with one solo hit.

Ferris State honored its two seniors in Kent and Merren prior to their final regular-season home contests as part of "Senior Day" activities in conjunction with the regular-season home finale.

The Bulldogs hit the road for their final two GLIAC regular-season contests next weekend as FSU visits Hillsdale on Friday (Nov. 15) at 7 p.m. (ET) before facing Northwood in Midland on Saturday (Nov. 16) at 3 p.m. (ET).

Ferris State moved into a tie for second place overall in the GLIAC's standings following today's action.  Grand valley State holds a two-match lead over FSU, Northwood and Northern Michigan as all three teams are tied at 13-3 in the GLIAC North to date.
