Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball team was upset by Northwood 3-1 in the quarterfinal-round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament on Wednesday (Nov. 20) night at the Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids.
With the win, the fifth-seeded Timberwolves will advance to the GLIAC Tourney Semifinals this weekend.
Fourth-seeded FSU dropped to 22-8 on the year with the setback and the Bulldogs, who are ranked second in the current Midwest Regional Rankings, will now have to await for the official NCAA-II Tournament selections to be made on Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. (ET) at www.ncaa.com.
The Timberwolves took the first set 26-24 before FSU rebounded to win set two 27-25. However, the Timberwolves clinched the win with a 25-23 win in the third set followed by a 25-15 victory in the fourth frame.
Northwood hit .194 for the match compared to FSU's .126 showing for the night. The Timberwolves also recorded 57 kills and 77 digs to 51 kills and 70 digs for the Bulldogs. FSU had seven service errors along with four aces while NU totaled five errors and two aces at the service line.
Junior Courtney Rehm paced the Bulldogs with 16 kills in the match. She also had 13 digs in a double-double showing. Meanwhile, sophomore Alexis Huntey contributed 12 kills to go with 13 digs.
FSU also received 20 digs from senior libero Brandie Merren along with 11 by sophomore Megan Vander Meer and 10 posted by freshman setter Stephanie Sikorski, who contributed 39 assists.
Northwood was led by Krysta Kramer's match-high 19 kills in addition to Juliia Pakhomenko's 18 kills and 15 digs. Elizabeth Barker added 21 digs while Birta Bjornsdottir added 12 as did Kramer. Jordan Dunn contributed 11 digs to go with 46 assists.
With the win, Northwood avenged a 3-0 setback in Midland to the Bulldogs in the regular-season finale last Saturday (Nov. 16) and improved to 21-9 overall on the year. The Timberwolves were ranked third in the most recent NCAA-II Midwest Regional Rankings.
