Ferris State Volleyball Caps Weekend Sweep By Winning Sixth-Straight Match

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 16th-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball team wrapped up a big weekend of road action by winning its sixth-straight match with a 3-1 win at Hillsdale on Saturday (Oct. 11) afternoon in Hillsdale, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who beat Findlay by a 3-1 count to open the weekend stretch on Friday night, dropped the opening set 25-18 before rallying to win the next three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-16.

With the victory, Ferris State improved to 12-3 overall and an impressive 10-1 in the GLIAC this season to date. The Chargers, who along with the Oilers were near the top of the GLIAC South Division standings heading into the weekend, fell to 7-8 overall and 6-5 in league play.

Balance was again the theme for the Bulldogs as junior Megan Vander Meer and junior Alexis Huntey both recorded 15 kills each. Junior Caroline Heitzman tallied 13 kills in support for the Bulldogs, who hit .276 for the day.

Ferris State also received 51 assists from sophomore setter Stephanie Sikorski to go with 22 digs from senior Courtney Rehm. Huntey added 17 digs while libero Danielle Dowd had 15 and Vander Meer chipped in with 13 on the afternoon.

Overall, the Bulldogs registered 57 kills and only 15 attack errors on 152 total attempts. FSU hit .405 in the third set and finished with a percentage above .200 in all four frames. They also limited the Chargers to less than .100 in two of the four sets.

In addition to those numbers, the Bulldogs also posted eight service aces, including four from Rehm and two by Dowd. FSU had only five service mistakes and finished with eight block assists to go with two solo efforts.

On the Hillsdale side, Haylee Booms paced the Chargers with 13 kills and Emily Wolfert tallied 12 overall. Marissa Owen netted 39 assists while Jordan Denmark had a team-high 18 digs. Owen added 16 digs and Brittany Jandasek contributed 15 to help the Charger cause.

HC hit .227 for the day and finished with 51 kills, 16 errors and 154 total attacks. The Chargers also had 70 digs, but had no service aces and nine errors from the service line.

Ferris State will next take part in the 2014 GLIAC/Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Crossover Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17-18, in Aurora, Ill. Official pairings will be announced by the two conference offices later this weekend for the important regional event.
