Early Leads Lifts Host Northwood over Bulldogs In GLIAC-Opening Action

Big Rapids, Mich. - Host Northwood jumped out to an early lead and held off the nationally-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad as both teams opened Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action on Friday night at Riepma Arena in Midland.
The Timberwolves scored a 3-1 win over the Bulldogs by pulling out a 25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23 victory over FSU, which had won three of its last four matches entering the league-opening tiltt.
With the win, Northwood improved to 7-2 overall this season with the Bulldogs dropping to 4-5 on the year.
The host school started quickly as NU hit .294 in the opening set and tallied a .240 figure or better from the attack line in three of the four sets in the match.
Overall, Northwood produced 65 kills to go with 25 errors on 157 total attempts for a .255 attack figure. The Timberwolves also totaled 85 digs with two aces, a solo block and 10 assists swats at the net.
Meanwhile, Ferris State recorded 48 kills on 164 attempts with 22 errors for a .159 hitting figure. The Bulldogs also compiled 60 digs, two aces, five solo blocks and 12 assisted efforts on the block.
Junior middle hitter Maria Kronner paced FSU with 13 kills overall and she posted a .286 attack percentage on the night. Freshman hitter Allyson Cappel and sophomore Katie Placek notched 10 kills each.
The Bulldogs also received 14 digs from Placek and senior setter Stephanie Sikorski, who added 44 assists in the FSU setback. Kornner totaled four block assists as did Cappel for the Bulldogs.
Northwood was led by Allison Getty with 17 kills. Carson Rutherford added 16 kills, Brenna Murphy totaled 11 kills and Sydney Greulich came up with 10 digs overall for NU. Hailey Jones directed the attack with 62 assists and a match-high tying 19 digs. Sommer VandenBerge chipped in 19 digs while Getty and Rutherford each tallied 15 digs to go with 14 by Murphy.
Ferris State will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 17) as FSU ventures to Hillsdale to face the Chargers in league action. Match time is set for 2 p.m. (ET).
