'Dawgs Sink Lakers For Fifth Consecutive Volleyball Victory This Season

Allendale, Mich. –The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad scored an impressive 3-1 victory over West Michigan archrival Grand Valley State on Tuesday (Sept. 27) night as the Bulldogs claimed the first meeting of the year between the two schools inside GVSU's Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale.

The Bulldogs picked up their fifth-straight win this season and won for the seventh time in eight outings by beating the Lakers in the week-night road encounter.

The triumph was the fourth victory in the last four days for FSU as the Bulldogs won the match by a 26-24, 21-25, 25-20 and 25-18 score.

Freshman outside hitter Allyson Cappel and junior outside hitter Ayanna Buckley led the way with 15 kills apiece for Ferris State. Meanwhile, junior middle hitter Maria Kronner added nine kills and sophomore outside hitter Katie Placek earned eight in the winning effort.

In a relatively even affair from the attack line, the Bulldogs hit .189 as a team to the Lakers .191 mark for the evening.

Defensively, Ferris State had four players record 18 or more digs with Cappel posting a match-high 24. Junior libero Lauren Reminga had 22 digs while Placek notched 20 and senior setter Stephanie Sikorski totaled 18 in the contest.

The two teams were equally potent in keeping plays alive as GVSU and FSU both tallied 97 digs.

Sikorski led all setters with 45 assists and added three kills. She also tied for a match-high two solo blocks. Kronner had five total blocks for FSU, which led the Bulldogs, while Cappel had four block assists.

GVSU's Staci Brower had an unmatched seven total blocks with Jaycia Suseland adding two solo blocks and six total hits at the net for the Lakers.

Both teams were also strong at the net with the Lakers posting 18 total blocks to the Bulldogs' 14 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) showdown.

Ferris State held a decisive advantage from the service stripe as FSU combined for five service aces with Grand Valley State failing to record one in the match.

Suseland led the Laker attack with a match-best 17 kills while Brower hit .286 and earned 13 kills in the tilt.

With the victory, Ferris State improved to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in GLIAC play, which presently gives the Bulldogs sole possession of second place in the conference behind three teams tied at 4-1 overall.

The Bulldogs will next hit the road to take on the Lake Erie Storm this Friday (Sept. 30) at 7 p.m. (ET) in Painesville, Ohio.
