Ferris State Volleyball Caps Off Unbeaten Weekend With Saturday Home Sweep

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 14th-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad stayed unbeaten on the year as the Bulldogs wrapped up their own season-opening Bulldog Invitational with a perfect record by sweeping their final two opponents on Saturday (Sept. 2) at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena.

The Bulldogs rolled past Northwest Missouri State 3-0 in Saturday afternoon's opener before rallying back for a 3-1 victory over Quincy (Ill.) in the finale. FSU finished 4-0 in the nine-team invitational inside the Ewigleben Sports Complex.

In the opener on Saturday, Ferris State overwhelmed the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State by a 25-19, 25-18 and 25-15 score.

Sophomore outside hitter Courtney Brewer added to her strong weekend by leading all players with 11 kills and also chipped in a team-best three total blocks.

The Bulldogs featured a balanced attack as sophomore outside hitter Allyson Cappel and senior middle hitter Maria Kronner totaled nine kills apiece with senior middle hitter Ayanna Buckley adding eight in the victory.

For the match, Ferris State outhit the Bearcats .271 to .119 and added five service aces. Defensively, senior libero Lauren Reminga had a match-best 16 digs and chipped in four assists.

Redshirt freshman setter Maeve Grimes had 37 assists and added a kill that won the second set for Ferris State.

The Bulldogs followed up the afternoon victory by beating Quincy 17-25, 25-15, 26-24 and 25-19 in evening action. The Hawks claimed the first set and battled well against the Bulldogs but came up short in the road setback.

Reminga had a strong defensive performance in the win as she tallied a season-high 30 digs. Overall, the Bulldogs had 75 total digs with Brewer adding 13 along with 12 by junior Katie Placek and 10 from Cappel.

Bulldog senior Maria Kronner had a strong match as she compiled a match-best 17 kills and hit .519 in the victory. Cappel added 13 kills with Brewer notching 10 kills in the win. FSU also got three service aces apiece from both Grimes and Cappel.

Overall, Ferris State hit .211 and came up with 54 total kills in addition to six team blocks and nine aces in the win.

The Bulldogs, who were one of two teams to finish a perfect 4-0 in the invitational this weekend along with Upper Iowa, had three players named to the all-tournament team including Cappel, Kronner and Reminga.

The 14th-ranked Bulldogs will hit the road next weekend as they take part in the prestigious Colorado Premier Challenge for the second time in three years in Denver. FSU opens action against the University of Tampa (Fla.) on Friday (Sept. 8) at 4:30 p.m. (ET) before facing Southwest Minnesota State in a 8 p.m. (ET) in day one competition.
