Ferris State Volleyball Opens 2018 Season With Win Over Upper Iowa

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 21st-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball team opened the 2018 campaign with a 3-1 triumph over the Upper Iowa Peacocks on Thursday (Aug. 23) evening in the Bulldogs' own home invitational at the Ewigleben Sports Complex.

The Bulldogs won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-17 before the Peacocks came back to claim the third set 25-19. However, FSU sealed the win with a 25-21 triumph in the fourth frame.

Ferris State totaled 58 kills in the victory and compiled a .225 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Allyson Cappel led the team with 18 kills while junior middle hitter Mekayla Carey had 17 kills overall.

Junior setter Maeve Grimes paced the attack with 48 assists on the night along with three kills and 10 digs.

Bulldog sophomore outside hitter Katie O'Connell compiled 21 digs, an ace, and eight kills in the victory.

The Peacocks leading hitter was Haley Weepie with 10 kills. Anna Winter and Lauren Wombles each added nine kills.

Ferris State limited Upper Iowa to a .059 hitting figure and the Bulldogs also compiled four solo blocks along with 14 assists at the net.

The Bulldogs return to action on Friday as they continue the Ferris State Invitationl against nationally 18th-ranked Winona State at 12 p.m. (ET). FSU then hosts defending national champion and preseason top-ranked Concordia-St. Paul at 6 p.m. (ET) in day two action.
