Ferris State Volleyball Wins GLIAC Opener As Title Defense Begins

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 13th-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad swept the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers in their 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opener on Friday (Sept. 7) evening inside the Ewigleben Sports Complex.

The four-time defending GLIAC Champions beat the Rangers by scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-20 in the first-ever conference tilt between the two schools. With the win, FSU improved to 6-3 on the year.

Junior outside hitter Allyson Cappel totaled 12 kills on the night while junior middle hitter Mekayla Carey was close behind with nine kills for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Katie O'Connell also had seven kills in the victory.

The Bulldogs utilized nearly their entire lineup and the trio of freshmen outside hitter Danielle Thompson, middle hitter Samantha Hermann and sophomore Morgan Ross each notched three kills apiece in the balanced effort.

Junior setter Maeve Grimes had 32 assists, nine digs and two aces while sophomore setter Julia Mitchell totaled three assists on the night.

Bulldog senior libero Katie Placek totaled 22 digs to lead FSU in that category.

The Rangers were paced by Katie Adams with nine kills and Elizabeth Mavis with seven in the setback.

Ferris State will host Purdue Northwest in GLIAC action on Saturday (Sept. 8) starting at 2 p.m. (ET).
