Big Rapids, Mich. - The sixth-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad stayed atop the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) standings as the Bulldogs earned a 3-0 sweep over Wayne State in league home action Friday (Oct. 5) evening inside FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena.
The Bulldogs took the opening two sets by identical 25-19 scores and then rallied back after falling behind in the third set to score a 28-26 win to complete the sweep.
With the triumph, FSU improved to 15-3 overall this year and remained unbeaten in league play with a perfect 10-0 mark. Wayne State, which entered the match as one of the top two squads in the GLIAC South Division, fell to 10-8 overall and 5-5 in GLIAC play.
Junior hitter Allyson Cappel, who was honored before the match for recently notching her 1,000th career kill, had a big night with a match-high 19 kills and a .417 hitting figure. She added 11 digs with two solo blocks in the victory.
The Bulldogs also got 12 kills from middle hitter Mekayla Carey along with 10 each from junior Courtney Brewer and sophomore Katie O'Connell.
Ferris State's Katie Placek tallied a team-high 12 digs with both junior setter Maeve Grimes and O'Connell adding 10 each along with the 11 from Cappel.
Overall, the Bulldogs hit .320 for the match as compared to WSU's .184 attack figure. FSU posted 54 kills and only 14 errors on 125 total attacks. Grimes paced the offensive unit with 46 assists in the win.
The Bulldogs also finished with 57 digs, eight blocks and three service aces, but had 10 errors from the service line. Samantha Hermann had three solo blocks for the Bulldogs.
Wayne State was led by Julia Malewicz, who finished with a team-high 10 kills. Ellie Rodriguez totaled 12 digs and Kamryn Duffield notched 30 assists in the setback.
Ferris State will host the GLIAC South Division's top team in Ashland on Saturday (Oct. 6) starting at 3 p.m. (ET) in Big Rapids.
