Ferris State Volleyball Advances To GLIAC Tourney Championship Match

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 6th-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball team moved on to its fifth consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship match with a 3-0 victory over the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (25-21, 25-14, 25-14) inside the Ewigleben Sports Complex on Friday (Nov. 9) in league semifinal action.

GLIAC Player of the Year and junior Allyson Cappel led the Bulldogs with 14 kills as they marched past the Cardinals in search of a fifth consecutive GLIAC Tournament title, and fourth straight on their own court. Cappel also picked up 10 digs and a solo block in the match.

Ferris State junior Courtney Brewer added 13 kills, while sophomore Katie O'Connell had 11 for the Bulldogs. Defensively, GLIAC Libero of the Year Katie Placek had a team-best 18 digs, while first team All-GLIAC setter Maeve Grimes had 40 assists and four kills.

The Bulldogs dominated, hitting for a .317 kill percentage, while holding Saginaw Valley State to a .133 mark.

The Cardinals were led by the 13 kills credited to Sarah Tabit, while Emily Friesl had nine but hit for a strong .500 kill percentage. SVSU had a 14-8 edge in total blocks on the night.

Ferris State had a 73-52 advantage in digs on the night as they stifled SVSU's offensive attack.

With the victory, the Bulldogs will host the GLIAC Championship match on Saturday (Nov. 10) at 4:00 pm EST inside the Ewigleben Sports Complex when they take on the sixth seeded Davenport Panthers. The first 150 FSU students with ID will receive FREE admission at the door.
