Ferris State Volleyball Stays Unbeaten With Victory Over McKendree In Friday Night Action

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad stayed perfect on the season as the Bulldogs battled back for a 3-1 win over McKendree (Ill.) in non-league action at the Ferris State Invitational on Friday (Sept. 6) evening in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs dropped the opening frame 26-24, but came back to win the next three sets by scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-21 to improve to 2-0 on the year.

In the victory, Ferris State got a team-high 15 kills with seven digs from senior standout Allyson Cappel. Senior Courtney Brewer added 13 kills while both junior hitter Katie O'Connell and sophomore hitter Samantha Hermann had 12 kills apiece.

Senior setter Maeve Grimes had a strong performance with 54 assists from the setter position. The Bulldogs also got 17 digs from libero Lauren Helsen and 15 by O'Connell. Freshman Kira Merkle totaled three block assists and a solo block at the net.

Overall, FSU hit an impressive .326 for the night and came up with 62 kills on 138 total attempts with only 17 hitting mistakes.

The Bulldogs also compiled 51 digs to go with four service aces and five blocks, but had 12 errors from the service line.

Meanwhile, McKendree notched 52 kills on 129 attempts with 20 mistakes for a .248 figure and the Bearcats posted 50 digs, six blocks and two aces with 10 service errors.

McKendree's Elle Russell had a match-high 16 kills while Maddie Misner added 10 in the setback.

Ferris State, ranked 14th nationally, will wrap up its own home invitational by taking on Gannon on Saturday (Sept. 7) at 10 a.m. (ET) followed by an evening tilt versus Seton Hill (Pa.) beginning at 6 p.m. (ET) inside the Ewigleben Sports Arena.
