Ferris State Moves Into First-Place Tie Atop GLIAC With Win Over Michigan Tech

Big Rapids, Mich. - Nationally 16th-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball claimed a sweep over Michigan Tech in a showdown between the top two teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division standings on Saturday (Oct. 5) afternoon inside the Ewigleben Sports Arena.

The Bulldogs, who entered the match trailing MTU by a single match in the standings, forged into a first-place tie as FSU rolled to a 25-21, 25-21, 25-18 triumph over MTU. The win was the fifth-straight at home for FSU and all five victories have been by identical 3-0 scores.

Senior hitter Allyson Cappel led the way for the Bulldogs with a match-high 16 kills and she added 13 digs while hitting .484 overall for the afternoon. Along with Cappel, fellow senior outside hitter Courtney Brewer notched nine kills and junior Katie O'Connell had eight for FSU.

Bulldog libero Nina Gorgijevska came up with 15 digs and O'Connell added 12 in addition to Cappel's 13 for the Bulldogs, who compiled 58 digs overall. Senior setter Maeve Grimes posted 38 assists.

Ferris State also had 12 block assists and a solo block in addition to five service aces and a .297 team attack figure.

Michigan Tech got 11 kills from Olivia Ghormley and nine by Anna Jonynas. Megan Utlak totaled 14 digs and Laura De Marchi had 31 assists. The Huskies hit .162 overall with 53 digs, 10 block assists and three aces.

With the win, Ferris State improved to 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC this year. The Bulldogs are also now 9-0 at home this campaign. MTU dropped to 11-4 overall and 6-1 in league action.

FSU will visit West Michigan rival Grand Valley State on Friday, Oct. 11, for a 7 p.m. (ET) league encounter in Allendale before taking on Davenport on Saturday, Oct. 12, starting at 2 p.m. (ET) in Caledonia.
