Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally #17 ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball team swept the Wayne State Warriors 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-17) inside Ewigleben Arena in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Semifinal to advance to the Championship match for the sixth consecutive season on Saturday (Nov. 23).
In the stretch that dates back to November 2014, the Bulldogs have swept 13 of their 17 GLIAC tournament opponents, and have never played more than four sets in a GLIAC Tournament match.
The Bulldogs were led by senior outside hitter Courtney Brewer on the attack, who finished with 17 kills and a .517 hitting percentage. Fellow senior outside hitter Allyson Cappel finished with 15 kills on a .345 attack percentage.
On Cappel's 13th kill of the afternoon, she established a new career-high in single season kills. She ran the total to 437 by the end of the match, topping her 434-kill 2016 season. Cappel, the only player to win GLIAC Player of the Year in three consecutive seasons, has three seasons with more than 400 kills to her name.
Ferris State junior outside hitter Katie O'Connell had eight kills as well for the Bulldogs, to go with 10 digs on the day.
The Bulldogs had five service aces, two-each courtesy of Cappel and senior setter Maeve Grimes. Grimes also added three kills and 43 assists on the day, and tied for the team lead in total blocks with three. Sophomore middle hitter Samantha Hermann and Brewer each had three total blocks as well for Ferris State.
For Wayne State, Taylor Wagner had 10 kills to lead all Warriors. Wayne State finished with 14 total blocks.
The Bulldogs held Wayne State to an .096 attack percentage for the day, while Ferris State hit for a .385 mark. The Bulldogs had 15 or more kils in each set, while holding the Warriors below 10 in each set as well.
Ferris State junior libero Nina Gorgijevska finished with a match-best 16 digs while Brewer added 14. The Bulldogs piled up 57 digs to the Warriors' 39 on the day.
For the fifth consecutive season, the Bulldogs will host the GLIAC Championship match inside Ewigleben Arena. Match time is set for 4 p.m. (ET) on Sunday (Nov. 24) in Big Rapids where the Bulldogs will take on Michigan Tech University.
