Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally second-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad defeated 12th-ranked rival Grand Valley State in a 3-0 sweep on Saturday (Nov. 2) before a capacity crowd at Bulldog Arena.
The Bulldogs captured a 25-19, 25-22, 25-15 win over the Lakers, sweeping GVSU in a pair of regular-season matchups this year. The win lifted FSU to a 24-0 mark and FSU also took a two-match lead atop the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) standings following the first-place showdown.
The loss for GVSU was only its second of the year with both coming at the hands of the Bulldogs. The Lakers, who are 21-2 overall, dropped to 10-2 in the league while FSU improved to 13-0 in conference play.
A large crowd saw the Bulldogs put together an impressive showing in the triumph. The Bulldogs finished with a .244 attack figure, producing 38 kills and only eight attack errors on 123 attempts. FSU also had 58 digs and came up with 14 block assists, four solo blocks and four aces.
Both senior outside hitter Olivia Henneman-Dallape and freshman hitter Gabby Piazza notched 12 kills each in the Ferris State win. Meanwhile, seniors Claire Nowicki and Chelsie Freeman each added 12 kills while senior setter Kaylee Maat totaled 29 assists in directing the attack.
Defensively, Nowicki came up with a team-best 16 digs and senior libero Leah Bylut finished with 12 digs. FSU's Emma Bleecher also added 10 digs in the win.
Ferris State was led at the net by senior middle hitter Syann Fairfield, who tallied four block assists and two solo blocks. Henneman-Dallape contributed two solo blocks and two assists while Freeman had three block assists at the net.
The Lakers finished with a .118 attack percentage and had 19 attack mistakes on 127 tries to go with 34 kills. GVSU totaled 56 digs with six block assists and five aces.
The Bulldogs will continue their four-match homestead against Northern Michigan on Friday, Nov. 8, inside Bulldog Arena before playing host to Michigan Tech on Saturday, Nov. 9. Both matches are slated for 5 p.m. (ET) starts.
