Big Rapids, Mich. - The nation's 12th-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad bounced back big on Saturday (Sept. 27), beating Wayne State 3-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play inside Bulldog Arena.
The Bulldogs grabbed the early lead with a 26-24 win in set one and a 25-23 triumph in set two before WSU responded with a 25-21 victory in the third set. However, the Bulldogs captured a 25-23 decision in the fourth frame to put the Warriors away.
With the win, Ferris State improved to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play this year. WSU fell to 8-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
FSU finished the match with a .205 hitting percentage, totaling 51 kills and only 19 attack errors on 156 attempts. Meanwhile, the Warriors compiled a .228 effort with 58 kills and 22 attack errors on 158 tries.
The Bulldogs notched 70 digs while adding four block assists, four solo blocks and four service aces compared to WSU's 66 digs, seven aces, six block assists and three solos. Wayne State had 15 errors from the service line to only six for FSU.
The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Gabby Piazza with 17 kills. Emily May added 10 kills and Logyn Geren finished with eight overall. Setter Hayley Wegener tallied 39 assists and four FSU players had 10 digs or more, including 20 from Hope Davies along with 15 by Jasmine Wellet, 12 from Emma Bleechere and 10 by Wegener. Both Geren and Bleecher totaled two block assists each.
The Warriors were paced by Katerina Stout with 13 kills. Three others had 11 kills each while Kayla Dulgar netted 45 assists. Kendyl Andrews led WSU with a match-high 25 digs in the setback.
The Bulldogs will play their next eight matches on the road starting on Friday, Oct. 3, against Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis. Match time is set for 7 p.m. (ET).
