Big Rapids, Mich. - For the second time this campaign, Ferris State
University junior runner Tina Muir (St. Albans,
U.K.) has been recognized as the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Cross Country
Runner of the Week.
Muir claimed the honor following her latest race when she won the
Wisconsin-Parkside Lucian Rosa Invitational (Oct. 10) in Kenosha,
Wis. The announcement was made this week by the league
office.
Muir helped the nationally-ranked Bulldog women’s squad to
the team championship in the 5K event as FSU placed four runners
among the top 20 scoring individuals overall to finish with 60
points. Ferris finished ahead of the four NCAA Division I programs
taking part in the competition.
In the event, Muir continued her strong performance for the
women’s team by winning the individual title with a time of
17:45.8 on the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course at
Wisconsin-Parkside. The women’s race featured 176 runners.
Muir took the lead prior to the 2K mark and held off former
Wisconsin-Parkside runner Jessica Monson, who placed second nearly
16 seconds behind.
The victory was Muir's third title in as many outings this campaign
and this week's recognition represents the third time in her career
Muir has claimed the GLIAC weekly honor. She originally
received the same recognition last campaign following an
eighth-place finish in the 36th annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront
Invitational (9/27/08) at Montrose Beach in Chicago and claimed it
again earlier this campaign after taking first place in the Ray
Helsing Bulldog Invitational (Sept. 18) at FSU's Katke Golf Course.
Muir placed 12th overall at last year's nationals to become only the second All-American in Bulldog women's cross country history and FSU's highest finisher ever at the national championships. Her performance helped head coach Steve Picucci's squad wrap up one of its most successful seasons ever with a 17th-place performance a year ago at the 2008 NCAA-II National Championships (11/22/08) held at Cooper's Lake Campground in Slippery Rock, Pa.
The Ferris women’s cross country team is ranked third in
the latest United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches
Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Midwest Regional Rankings.
FSU’s women are ranked 18th nationally this week.
The Bulldogs will compete in the GLIAC Championships this Saturday,
Oct. 24, starting at 11 a.m. (EDT) at the Maple Leaf Golf Course in
Linwood, Mich. The site is located 19 miles north of host
Saginaw Valley State University's campus.
