Bulldog Hockey Falls to Northern Michigan and Splits Opening CCHA Series

Marquette, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's hockey team wrapped up its first weekend of action in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) play against Northern Michigan Saturday (Oct. 28) with a 4-1 setback at the Berry Events Center.

Ferris State (2-3-1) split the weekend series with the Wildcats after a 2-1 overtime win on Friday. In Saturday's game, the Bulldogs started Logan Stein in goal, who saved 24 shots and gave up three goals.

The Bulldogs scored first at 13:25 in the first period on the power play. Antonio Venuto recorded his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Stepan Pokorny and Jack Mesic assisted on the power play goal for Venuto.

Northern Michigan trailed 1-0 going into the second period. They scored at 6:03 on a Josh Zinger power play goal to even the score. Zinger's first goal of the season came from Kevin Marx-Noren. Later, at the 14:35 mark, Marx-Noren tipped a shot from Aiden Gallacher and recorded his first collegiate goal with Gallacher collecting the assist. NMU took a 2-1 lead into the third period.

The Wildcats scored two more times in the third period. Artem Shlaine scored first on the power play, while Zinger assisted and earned a multi-point night. Kristof Papp also assisted. FSU pulled Logan Stein for the extra attacker with two minutes remaining while trailing 3-1, and Viking Gustafsson-Nyberg scored an empty netter to seal the Wildcats' first victory of the year. Ferris State went 1-4 on the power play and killed 2-4 penalties on the night. They blocked 14 shots and won 22 faceoffs, losing 32. Zach Faremouth, Luigi Benincasa and Jack Mesic each attempted four shots in the loss.

Northern Michigan got multiple points from both Zinger and Marx-Noren, and Beni Halasz had a terrific performance in goal. He made 37 saves on 38 shots faced, good for a .974 save percentage.

The Bulldogs will return home to Big Rapids on Friday, Nov. 3, to face St. Lawrence in non-league play. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. (ET) at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
