Bulldog Hockey Suffers Overtime Setback Against Minnesota State

Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team dropped its first overtime game of the season Saturday (Nov. 11) in a 3-2 setback against the Minnesota State Mavericks in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) play at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.

The Bulldogs (3-5-1) fell to 1-3-0 in CCHA play with the setbacl that marked their first overtime defeat in the last six overtime periods dating back to the CCHA Tournament a season ago. 

FSU started the scoring in the second period at the 4:40 mark. Emerson Goode scored unassisted for his second collegiate goal, both coming this weekend against the Mavericks. The Bulldogs held that lead for only 49 seconds as Minnesota State answered with a goal from Sam Morton. Jakob Stender assisted.

The Mavericks took the lead with a goal at 8:36 in the second period. Morton scored his second of the night, this time on the power play. Lucas Sowder tallied the helper. 

Ferris State tied the game with 5:00 remaining in regulation courtesy of Nick Nardecchia's second tally of the year. He shot from behind the net and squeezed the puck between Alex Tracy in goal for the Mavericks and the right-side post for the game-tying goal. Travis Shoudy recorded his team-leading seventh helper of the year with Tyler Schleppe also assisting. 

Minnesota State started the overtime period with a power play that carried over from the end of regulation. Then, Stepan Pokorny was whistled for a penalty and the Bulldogs skated 5-on-3 for 33 seconds. They killed both penalties, but the Mavericks tallied the winning goal 3-on-3 with 6.3 seconds remaining in overtime. Evan Murr recorded his first collegiate goal with an assist from Jordan Steinmetz.

For the game, the Bulldogs were 0-4 on the power play and the Mavericks were 1-6. Logan Stein made 32 saves on 35 shots faced in net for the Bulldogs. Tracy was 29-of-31.

Ferris State will be back in action next weekend, visiting Michigan Tech on the road. Puck drop for Friday's (Nov. 17) game is set for 7:07 p.m. (ET) with coverage beginning on Sunny 97.3 and the Bulldog Sports Network at 6:30 p.m. (ET).
