Ferris State Hockey Falls in Home CCHA Contest Against Lake State to Close First Half

Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team suffered a home setback 5-1 against Lake Superior State University on Saturday (Dec. 16) in the Ewigleben Ice Arena.

In the final game of the first half of the season, the Bulldogs scored first, but were unable to hold on for a victory. Logan Stein drew the start in net for Ferris State and made 30 saves.

After a scoreless first period that saw Stein make nine saves, the Bulldogs got the first goal of the night at 0:36 in the second period. Nick Hale ripped a shot from the blueline that hit the crossbar, and Jason Brancheau punched it in past LSSU netminder Ethan Langenegger for his seventh goal this year. Hale recorded his first assist as a Bulldog and Ben Schultheis also assisted. 

Lake State answered for the tying goal at 9:07 courtesy of Cam Kungle. Evan Bushy and Timo Bakos assisted. Harrison Roy tallied a power play goal at 9:33 that gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead, with Bryan Huggins and John Herrington assisting. Lake State added one more goal in the middle period from Connor Milburn at 19:04, with Kungle tallying the assist. 

In the third period, the Lakers got another power play goal at 14:45, this time from Dawson Tritt. Roy and Bakos had the helpers. Milburn scored his second of the night at 17:41, and Branden Piku had the assist. 

For the game, the Bulldogs attempted 25 shots compared to 35 for LSSU. Langenegger made 24 stops, while Stein turned away 30 of the 35 shots he faced. The Lakers capitalized on two of their three power play chances, and the Bulldogs went 0-3 on their tries. Faceoff wins favored the Lakers 35-29.

Ferris State will break for the holiday and come back to take part in the Great Lakes Invitational (GLI) in Grand Rapids at the Van Andel Arena on Thursday, Dec. 28, at 7:00 p.m. (ET) against Michigan State. The Bulldogs beat the Spartans in the GLI last year 4-2.
