Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team played its first game in 2024 on Friday (Jan. 5) against the Bemidji State University Beavers in the Ewigbleben Ice Arena and fell 4-1 in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) play.

After two non-conference games with Michigan State and Alaska, respectively, at the Great Lakes Invitational in Grand Rapids, the Bulldogs returned home to Big Rapids for a conference game against the Beavers. Bemidji State came in leading the CCHA standings with 22 points and collected three more with a regulation win over the Bulldogs Friday.

BSU scored the first three goals of the game, including two tallies in the first period. Rhys Chiddenton scored his first collegiate goal at 12:14 to put Bemidji on the board. Lleyton Roed and Vince Corcoran assisted. Under two minutes later, Kirklan Irey tallied his fourth goal of the year and gave the Beavers a 2-0 lead that would hold going into the intermission. Roed assisted once again.

BSU struck first in the second period as well, taking a 3-0 lead on Donte Lawson's first career goal at 2:36. Patrik Satosaari assisted.

Ferris State got on the board at 9:32 in the second period courtesy of Antonio Venuto's team-leading 12th goal of the year. Nick Hale ripped a shot from the point that Venuto tipped in front of the net and beat BSU netminder Mattias Sholl and pulled the Bulldogs within two goals. Luigi Benincasa also assisted, and the Bulldogs went into the third period down 3-1.

Ferris State attempted 20 total shots in the first two periods, but were limited to just six in the third. The only goal scored was from the Beavers on an empty netter at 17:33 from Tony Follmer, his first career goal. His goal sealed a 4-1 win for the Beavers.

Logan Stein made 21 saves on 24 shots faced in goal for the Bulldogs in a losing effort. Sholl was 25-26 and earned his fourth victory of the year.

As a team, Ferris State won 28 faceoffs compared to 24 for Bemidji State, outshot the Beavers 26-25 and killed all five of their penalties while going 0-4 on power play opportunities.

Ferris State will be back in action Saturday (Jan. 6) for another game against the Beavers in the Ewigleben Ice Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. (ET) for Back to School Night.
