Bulldog Hockey Sweeps Lake Superior State With 3-2 Overtime Victory On The Road

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team completed the sweep of Lake Superior State University with an overtime game-winning goal by Travis Shoudy Saturday (Jan. 20) in Taffy Abel Arena.

The Bulldogs (8-16-1) topped the Lakers 5-3 in Big Rapids on Friday (Jan. 19) and followed that up with an overtime win by a 3-2 score on Saturday. With the win, Ferris State is now 5-1-1 in overtime this year, and earned its first weekend sweep of the season.

Noah Giesbrecht started between the pipes for the Bulldogs and earned his fourth win of the year with a 38-of-40 save performance. Ethan Langenegger took the loss for Lake State, turning away 27-of-30 shots.

Ferris State started the scoring early in the second period for the second night in a row. Caiden Gault led a break into the Laker zone and found Austin McCarthy streaking down the middle of the ice. McCarthy then fired a pass to Holden Doell on the backside, and the freshman buried his first collegiate goal. McCarthy earned his first career assist, and Gault got his second helper of the year.

The Lakers tied the game at 2:16 in the third period with a goal from Connor Milburn. Dawson Tritt and Artyom Borshyov had the helpers.

Ferris State recaptured the lead at 12:52 of the third, courtesy of Kaleb Ergang's sixth goal of the season. He took a shot from the point through traffic that found the back of the night, his second goal in as many nights. Stepan Pokorny assisted, his second helper of the series.

Lake State once again tied the game, this time at 18:09 in the third period with the extra attacker on. Timo Bakos leaked to the backside and buried a pass from Harrison Roy. Nate Schweitzer also assisted on the goal that forced overtime.

Shoudy ended the game just 48 seconds into overtime. He took a pass from Antonio Venuto in the left faceoff circle and fired a shot that beat Langenegger for the game-winner. His fourth goal of the season and second of the weekend gave Ferris State the 3-2 win.

With the sweep, Ferris State captured five points (of an available six) in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) standings.

For the game, Ferris State had 34 faceoff wins, 30 shots on goal, went 0-3 on the power play and killed its only penalty of the game. Lake Superior State had 33 faceoff wins and 40 shots on goal.

Ferris State will be back in action on Friday (Jan. 26) and Saturday (Jan. 27) for a road series at Augustana for the debut of Midco Arena in Sioux Falls, S.D.. Puck drop Friday is scheduled for 8:07 p.m. (ET) with pregame coverage beginning on Sunny 97.3 FM at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
