Men's Tennis Opens Action at Whitewater Fall Invitational

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis squad officially opened fall action by taking part in the University of Wisconson-Whitewater Fall Invitational held on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 5-6) in Whitewater, Wis.

In the top singles draw, FSU's Pablo Munoz Baroja claiemd the individual championship over Nicola Wehrle of Cardinal Stritch by a 6-3, 6-2 count. The Bulldogs' Yannic Mader also reached the consolation finals in the top draw.

Ferris State's Mathis Guerre fell in the quarterfinal round, but bounced back to win the consolation finals at the two singles flight.

The Bulldogs' Ayush Deswal also battled back at three singles and eventually fell in a tightly-contested three-setter for third place in individual action.

Ferris State's Josh McDermott won the title at four singles with a three-set win over Brendan Pietila while Cedric Rupa claimed seventh place at five singles by beating Martin Rayos del Sol of St. Francis in straight-sets. Meanwhile, Jack Seymour advanced to the semifinals before falling at six singles. Andrew Swirzcek won the seven singles title in two frames.

In doubles action, Baroja and Guerre fell in the consolation finals at the top flight while McDermott and Deswal were 8-3 winners for the top spot at the second flight. in third doubles action, Seymour and Swirczek dropped an 8-2 decision in consolation final action.

The Bulldogs will next take part in the ITA Regional Championships set for Sept. 28-30 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
