Ferris State Tennis Earns Split At GVSU As Men's Team Garners Win To Stay Atop GLIAC

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women' s tennis squads hit the road for a big test on Saturday (April 8) at archival Grand Valley State, earning a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) split.

The Ferris State men's team claimed a pivotal win, beating GVSU 5-2 to stay unbeaten in conference play and on top of the league standings. The victory avenged a setback to the Lakers in last year's NCAA Tournament action. GVSU won Saturday's women's match 7-0 overall.

In the men's contest, Ferris State moved to 12-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the GLIAC by beating the Lakers. FSU won the doubles point with victories at the second and third flights in the lineup before winning four of the six singles contests, including three of the top four spots.

"It was a huge win for our men's team," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "Grand Valley is a very good outdoor team, so this win was extra special after we fell to them outdoors in the first round of the NCAA Tourney last May."

The Lakers managed to win the women's match, taking two of three doubles positions before sweeping the singles play. FSU's top doubles team of Morgan Waller and Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer claimed a 6-3 triumph at the number one flight.

Both Ferris State teams will wrap up league regular-season action in Michigan's Upper Peninsula next weekend. The Bulldogs visit Lake Superior State on Friday (April 14) before heading to Michigan Tech on Saturday (April 15).
