Ferris State Tennis Squads Close Weekend With Sweep Over Hillsdale
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads closed out weekend action in a big way on Sunday (Feb. 25), sweeping Hillsdale in regional play with a pair of victories inside the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.
The Bulldogs pulled out an exciting 4-3 triumph in the women's match and then recorded a 6-1 victory in men's action. The men's win was FSU's third in as many days at home this weekend.
In the women's contest, Hillsdale jumped in front early by capturing the second and third doubles flights for the first point of the match. FSU did get a 7-6 triumph from Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer and Morgan Waller at one doubles.
However, in singles play, Ferris State notched wins in four of the six spots in the lineup to rally back for the win. FSU took both the second and third flights along with the fifth and sixth spots to garner the triumph. Both of the Bulldogs' setbacks at the fourth and sixth singles positions also went to third sets. Freshman Katherine Earnest clinched the match with a singles victory.
In the men's match, Ferris State improved to 5-1 overall this spring by beating Hillsdale FSU took the doubles round with wins at the top two spots and then proceeded to win five of six singles flights en route to the squad's fifth win in a row.
"It was a pretty good weekend going 20-1 between the three matches on the men's side," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "I'm very proud of how focused they were playing three matches in three days and knowing that, although we were the favorites in each match, that the other teams would be playing with nothing to lose. Yet, we stayed super competitive and played outstanding tennis."
Both Bulldog teams will next head to Florida for their annual spring break trip set for March 4-9.
