Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team suffered 5-2 and 4-2 setbacks to the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) double header Tuesday (March 28) at the FSU Softball Field.

The Bulldogs got strong pitching starts out of freshman pitcher Catherine O'Donohue and junior Aubrie Lafferty on the day despite the decisions.

In game one, Ferris State tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning when junior outfielder Kacey Bouche ripped a double that scored freshman Jadyn Joseph.

The Cardinals came back with four seventh inning runs to take a 5-1 lead on two singles and a triple after O'Donohue had scattered just four hits and five strikeouts through the first six innings.

Ferris State mounted a late charge when freshman catcher Natalie Teague grounded in freshman third baseman Brooklyn Verbeek from third, but could not complete the rally in the 5-2 series opening loss.

For SVSU, Emily Depew gave up just two runs, struck out nine and went seven innings on 123 pitches. O'Donohue took the loss on 98 pitches with five strikeouts and seven hits.

In game two, the contest went scoreless into the bottom of the fourth when the Bulldogs broke through when junior pinch hitter Katelyn Gabos got aboard. On a steal, the SVSU catcher threw the pickoff attempt into centerfield, scoring junior second baseman Josie Prince. Senior first baseman Evelyn Blood drove in Gabos for a 2-0 Bulldog lead moments later.

The Cardinals replied in the bottom of the fifth by scoring three off of relief pitcher and senior Kristie Gray on a double and a fielders choice.

Saginaw Valley State scroed an insurance tally in the top of the seventh inning for the 4-2 final.

For the Bulldogs Lafferty allowed one hit and walked one in three innings. Gray took the loss on 1.1 innings pitched, allowing five hits and three earned runs.

Ferris State heads to face off with Grand Valley State in Allendale on Saturday (April 1) at 1 and 3 pm ET in GLIAC play.
