Women's Golf Improves Score By Nine Strokes In Round Two At NCAA East Regional

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team lowered its score by nine strokes over the second round on Tuesday (May 3) at the NCAA East Regional Championships in Kansas City.

The Bulldogs, who carded a first-round 330 score on Monday, came back with a 321 figure for Tuesday's second 18 holes of action in the 54-hole postseason event at the Shoal Creek Golf Club. The par 71 course measured 5,865 yards.

Overall, the Bulldogs sit tied for 11th overall still heading into the final round at +83 for the two days of action to date. The University of Findlay leads the 15-team field at +14 for the first two rounds, owning a 20-shot lead over second place Indianapolis.

Ferris State sophomore Alayna Eldred currently is tied for seventh overall at +6 for the tournament, shooting back-to-back 74 scores in each of the first two rounds.

FSU's Abby Grevel is tied for 54th overall with a +24 figure for the two rounds of action, carding a 81 on Tuesday after a first-round 85 total.

Meanwhile, the Bulldog trio of Dani Staskowski, Hope Thebo and Lauren Kempf are all tied for 64th in the draw with +28 totals. Staskowski shot a 82 on Tuesday after her first-round 88 while Kempf matched her 85 score from round one in the second round and Thebo posted an 84 following her first-round 86 total.

Round three play starts on Wednesday in the three-day event at 8:30 a.m. (CT).

The regional championships are being hosted by William Jewell College and the Kansas City Sports Commission.

This year's berth marks the Bulldogs' first team trip to the postseason since 2014 when FSU finished fourth overall in the regional championships. The Bulldogs previously made 13 consecutive NCAA appearances from 2002 to 2014.

A total of 15 teams were selected from the East Region from a total of six different conferences in addition to six individual competitors from non-advancing schools.

All participants will compete through the 54 holes of competition with the top five teams from the East Region along with the top two individuals non on an advancing team moving on to the national championships set for May 10-14 at Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Ga.

Overall, the Bulldogs have twice captured a regional championship in 2003-04 and 2006-07 while attaining runner-up honors four times (2004-05, 2005-06, 2007-08, 2008-09).

Last year, in 2021, FSU's Alayna Eldred competed as an individual in the NCAA East Regional held in Carmel, Ind., and placed 14th overall, narrowly missing advancing to the NCAA-II National Championships with the performance.
