Bulldogs Battle In Close Contest Against Unbeaten NMU In GLIAC Home Opener

Postgame Interview & Highlights Video

Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University women's soccer squad returned home Friday after a four-game road stretch for its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) home opener against Northern Michigan, but fell 2-1 to the Wildcats.

The Bulldogs (2-3-2) battled the Wildcats (6-0-1) in a hard-fought GLIAC contest. Northern Michigan  scored first at 13:57 on a corner kick from Stephanie Trujillo. She placed a shot from the corner at the back post, and FSU starting goalkeeper Darya Mosallaei could not reach it. The Wildcats held their 1-0 lead through the first half.

In the first 45 minutes of play, NMU attempted 10 shots and had four corner kicks, compared to two shots from the Bulldogs.

Coming out of halftime, FSU picked up the aggression offensively. They sent five shots towards Northern Michigan's goalkeeper, Jillian Thompson. Finally, at 56:49, Maryn Rettenmund found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. Senior Isabella Sabo lofted a pass to Rettenmund from midfield, and the freshman beat Thompson to the ball in the box for a shot and score.

With the game tied 1-1, the Bulldogs fought hard to control the pace of play. Northern Michigan had multiple corner kicks late in the game, and Trujillo placed a pass to the back side of the net where Maria Storm headed it in for her second goal of the season with less than nine minutes to play.

FSU could not overcome the 2-1 deficit and ultimately fell to the Wildcats.

Northern Michigan attempted 25 total shots, of which 11 were on frame. Mosallaei recorded nine saves. FSU attempted seven shots, but just three were on target. Thompson made two saves in the victory.

The Bulldogs did not record a corner kick, while Northern Michigan had nine. Ferris State also committed 10 fouls compared to seven for the Wildcats.

FSU will remain at home for another GLIAC contest against the Michigan Tech Huskies on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m. (ET). The Bulldogs will honor their senior class 30 minutes prior to the start of Sunday's game.
