Ferris State Hockey Well-Represented As WCHA Unveils All-League & Academic Winners

Big Rapids, Mich. - Three members of the Ferris State University men's ice hockey team have received all-conference recognition as the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) today unveiled its 2016-17 all-league honorees.

Senior forward and Hobey Baker Award candidate Gerald Mayhew was one of six selections on the All-WCHA First Team and was also recognized as the league's Scoring Champion for his performance this year.

Meanwhile, sophomore forward Corey Mackin garnered All-WCHA Second Team recognition with freshman goaltender Justin Kapelmaster named to the All-WCHA Third Team.

Along with the all-conference selections, the WCHA also announced its 2016-17 Scholar-Athletes and All-Academic Team picks. The Bulldogs again ranked among the league leaders in both categories in total number of recipients honored for success in the classroom.

This season, Mayhew led the Bulldogs and the conference as he compiled 17 goals and 18 assists on the year for 35 points in 33 outings for the Bulldogs. Mackin was the team's second-leading scorer with 25 points on 13 goals and 12 assists in 36 games. Finally, Kapelmaster recorded a 9-4-3 mark during his initial season in net for FSU with a 2.22 goals against average and .930 save percentage in 19 outings as a rookie.

Overall, the Bulldogs had 16 players earned WCHA All-Academic Team recognition with at least a 3.00 overall grade points average for the previous two semesters. A total of 11 individuals were recognized previously as WCHA Scholar-Athletes by compiling at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA with at least a year of residency at the institution.
