Bulldog Athletics Saddened By Recent Passing Of Former Announcer and Friend John Smith

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University and Bulldog Athletics has been saddened by the recent loss of loyal announcer, friend and colleague John Smith, who passed away last week.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Smitty was well known as the voice of Ferris State Football on the radio in the late 1980's to early 2000's, where his vibrant personality and deep knowledge of the game brought excitement to every broadcast. He also lent his voice to Ferris State hockey games and served as an announcer at basketball and baseball games. On occasion, he would step in as an announcer for the West Michigan Whitecaps and the Grand Rapids Griffins. He cherished visiting ballparks across the country when he could and enjoyed playing softball during his years in Big Rapids, where he lived for a quarter of his life.

A gifted storyteller in West Michigan, Smith continued to serve as one of the Bulldogs' radio voices on call for many years and was a member of the Bulldog Athletics Hall of Fame Committee. Additionally, he filled in as a public address announcer and covered FSU Athletics and Bulldog student-athletes thru his work in the University News Services department.

Smith began his career as a news director in Cadillac and Big Rapids, bringing a warm, distinctive voice that became familiar and a comforting presence to listeners across West Michigan during his years as an award-winning anchor and reporter at WOOD Radio in Grand Rapids. Whether during the morning rush or evening wind-down, John brought color and life to the airwaves, a true artist who painted with words.

In 2015, John brought his talents back to Ferris State University, where he shared the stories of FSU students, faculty, staff, and programs with passion and dedication. Known for his exceptional ability to connect with people from all walks of life, John approached every story with curiosity, respect, and heart. His work leaves a lasting impression across the campus community.

A native of Saginaw and a resident of Comstock Park, John was deeply rooted in his faith and actively involved in his church and its choir. He faced a 13-year battle with prostate cancer with grace and quiet strength — often candid about his challenges, yet never one to complain.

John is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Hadley Smith, and their sons, Nathan and Izaak.

A celebration of John's life will be held at the St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids on Thursday, May 22. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. (ET), with a service at 4 p.m. (ET). A reception for all friends and family will be held after the service.

To honor John's life and service to Ferris State University, the Ferris flag will be lowered to half-staff on Thursday, May 22.
