Bio

Brandon Wirth joined the Athletics Communications staff as a graduate student for Ferris State Athletics prior to the 2023-24 season. He begins his second year in the position after previously serving as a Communications Intern for the department.

Wirth currently leads the creation and production of Ferris State’s “Behind the Bulldogs” podcast within the Bulldog Sports Network. As a student, he created the program in a collaborative partnership with Ferris State’s Bulldog Radio RSO. Alongside partner Joe Nagy, “Behind the Bulldogs” has tallied over 10,000 listens and 700 followers during the show’s four-year duration. The show was awarded as the top college audio sportscast by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters in 2024.

Along with his duties as podcast co-host, Wirth is slated to return as a play-by-play voice of Ferris State Volleyball for a third straight season on FloSports. He also will be spending time in rotation for broadcasting Bulldog Hockey, Soccer, and Softball as well as contributing to writing, multimedia, operations, and design elements for all 17 sports teams.

Before joining Ferris State Athletics, Wirth spent time as a sports reporter for the Ferris State Torch newspaper for over three years. In 2021, he earned the Outstanding Professionalism award from the publication. Wirth’s most notable work included being the beat writer for both of Ferris Football’s back-to-back National Championship seasons.

Along with the Torch, Wirth has experience as an associate director for both the “Red Out Wink and the Rink” and “Heart-to-Heart Hand-In-Hand” fundraising events with Ferris State Athletics. He has also served as the social media coordinator within the Sports Careers RSO, president of the Lambda Pi Eta honors society, and e-board member for Bulldog Radio RSO.

Along with his work at Ferris State, Wirth serves as the News Director and Sports Coordinator for the Big Rapids Media Network. This includes on-air, website, and social media coverage of local news and sports. He also serves as a play-by-play broadcaster for local high school football, basketball, and girls’ soccer at the Big Rapids Media Network. He also helps coordinate the station’s sports coverage, including local high school shows, “The Rundown” and “The West Michigan Sports Show”, as well as Detroit Lions, Tigers, and Red Wings broadcasts.

Wirth is a former student athlete with the Bulldog Cross Country and Track & Field teams. As a GLIAC Commissioner’s Award honoree, he finished his career with the fourth-fastest time in program history in the 3000-meter steeplechase event, a top-20 performer in the cross country record books and 12-time GLIAC All-Academic Excellence recipient. He was also honored as the GLIAC Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Sep. 12, 2022.

As a former Reed City standout, Wirth earned three Cadillac News All-Area first team honors, two All-CSAA first team awards, and All-State honors in cross country. He also earned All-CSAA honorable mention and All-District first team honors in baseball in which he helped Reed City win a CSAA conference championship, back-to-back district titles, and a regional championship game appearance in 2017.

A 2023 Ferris State graduate, Wirth holds a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a concentration in leadership and management as well as minors in social & digital media and multimedia Journalism. He is currently continuing his studies at the graduate level by pursuing a master’s degree in business administration.
