Ferris State Comes Up Short In GLIAC Evening Tilt Against Lake Superior State

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball squad battled the Lake Superior State Lakers in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Tuesday (Jan. 26), but suffered an 80-69 setback at Jim Wink Arena.

The Lakers jumped out to a 38-33 halftime lead. After the lead grew to double-digits, FSU closed the game on a pair of free throws from senior guard Walt Kelser only five minutes into the second half. However, LSSU pushed the lead back up and outscored the Bulldogs 42-36 over the final 20 minutes to earn the win.

Lake State utilized a 49.1% shooting effort and limited the Bulldogs to 43.6% shooting overall in garnering the league triumph. The Lakers also outrebounded FSU 35-31 for the evening.

Senior guard Walt Kelser paced the Bulldogs with a game-high 23 points, sophomore wing Deng Reng added 11 points and sophomore post Vejas Grazulis had 11 points.

For Lake Superior State, Kemon Basset tallied 16 points and Malek Adams added 15 points with Nigel Colvin scoring 13 points.

Overall, the Lakers were eight-of-18 (44.4%) from three-point range and went 16-of-19 (84.2%) at the free throw line. Ferris State was only three-of-20 (15%) behind the three-point stripe, but did make 18-of-24 (75%) free throws.

Along with his 23 points, Kelser totaled four assists as did freshman guard Jimmy Scholler and sophomore guard Jeremiah Washington. Meanwhile, sophomore wing Ben Davidson had a squad-best three steals to go with eight points while Grazulis notched three blocked shots and senior forward Michael Peterson had two.

Ferris State compiled 18 assists with nine steals and eight blocks in comparison to the Lakers' 17 assists, seven steals and two blocks. Bassett finished with a double-double as he added a game-high 10 rebounds for LSSU.

Ferris State will travel to Michigan's Upper Peninsula this weekend and face the Michigan Tech Huskies in Houghton. Friday's game tips off at 5 p.m. (ET) with Saturday's finale set for a 3 p.m. (ET) start at MTU's Student Development Complex Gymnasium.
