
Ferris State Comes Up Short Against Michigan Tech In Upper Peninsula
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball squad battled Michigan Tech to a first-half deadlock, but the host Huskies pulled out a 75-63 triumph over the Bulldogs on Thursday (Feb. 13) night in Houghton.
MTU outscored FSU 44-32 in the second frame after the two teams had both put up 31 points in the opening 20 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs were limited to 37.1% shooting for the game, including only a two-of-14 (14.3%) showing from the three-point arc. FSU went 15-of-21 (71.4%) at the free throw line.
Meanwhile, the Huskies converted 45.1% of their field goals and made 10-of-26 (38.5%) long range tries in addition to 19-of-26 (73.1%) free throws.
Senior forward Reece Hazelton tallied a team-best 13 points for FSU in the setback while Owen Hardy added 10 points off the bench on four-of-five shooting from the floor. Junior Tyler Hamilton and senior Deng Reng both totaled nine points apiece.
The Bulldogs held a slim 37-36 rebounding edvantage and FSU finished with only six turnovers compared to 10 for the Huskies.
Veteran Adam Hobson led Michigan Tech with 16 points off the bench while Gabe Smith added 14 points and Josh Terrian scored 12 points on four-of-six shooting from the three-point line. The Bulldogs held standout Marcus Tomashek, who had 45 points in the first matchup of the year between the two teams, to only six points with all six coming from the free throw line as he went 0-of-11 from the floor.
Ferris State dropped to 20-6 overall this year and 10-5 in the GLIAC. The Huskies improved to 17-6 overall and held onto a share of first-place with a 12-3 league record.
The Bulldogs will head to Marquette to face Northern Michigan on Saturday (Feb. 15) in a matchup of two squads both tied for second place in the GLIAC. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. (ET).
