University Center, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball squad closed out the regular-season in a big way on the road Saturday (March 1), beating Saginaw Valley State 84-65 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at O'Neill Arena in University Center.
The Bulldogs jumped in front 13-2 early on before the lead was cut to five with 11:42 to go in the half. The lead grew to 27-11 with eight minutes remaining in the half and FSU led by as many as 20 points in the first period before SVSU closed with a 7-0 run to trim the deficit to 39-26 at the break.
Ferris State seized control again early in the second half and extended the margin to 28 point with 12 minutes to play in the game. Overall, Ferris State led by as many as 30 points in the game.
Junior guard Tyler Hamilton led the Bulldogs with 19 points while junior Nathan Claerbaut had 18 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Ethan Erickson scored 11 early points for FSU and finished with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Bulldogs shot 51% from the floor and hit six-of-19 (31.6%) three's along with 22-of-29 (75.9%) free throws. Meanwhile, the Cardinals finished 33.8% from the field and were six-of-27 (22.2%) from beyond the arc along with 11-of-15 (73.3%) at the charity stripe.
Saginaw Valley State got 18 points from Toodles Seal in the setback in addition to 10 by Nate Washburn.
The Bulldogs out rebounded SVSU 41-39 for the day and outscored the Cardinals 40-28 inside the paint.
With the win, the Bulldogs closed out the regular-season with a 24-7 overall record.
